Understanding the essential role of protein quantity and quality for optimal performance

Protein quantity & quality

“Exercise triggers recovery processes that can increase muscle growth and enhance performance. To maximize these benefits, consuming the right amount and type of protein is essential,” says Dr. Andy Holwerda, Senior Scientist at Danone Research & Innovation.

Adequate protein intake post-exercise is important for several reasons. The right amount supplies the body with the necessary amino acid building blocks for muscle repair and development, and high-quality protein sources – containing all essential amino acids – are particularly effective in promoting muscle protein synthesis and recovery.

How is protein quality determined?

Protein quality is determined by its digestibility and amino acid composition in comparison to a theoretical reference protein (measured by the Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score). Complete proteins, which contain all nine essential amino acids (histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine), are generally found in animal-based sources. In contrast, some plant-based sources are low in one or more of these amino acids. Therefore, additional considerations are required to ensure that a balanced diet based on plant-based products supplies all essential amino acids.

Our research & innovation

Maintaining a healthy diet with sufficient high-quality protein ensures the body receives all the necessary amino acids and nutrients to function effectively. At Danone Research & Innovation, we strive to optimize the protein quality in our nutritional solutions by identifying the best combinations of plant-based protein sources that promote high digestibility while providing all nine essential amino acids.

To address the lower amounts of amino acids in plant-based proteins, we are also exploring protein fortification with specific amino acids. Fortifying plant-based protein products with other ingredients can further stimulate muscle growth and maintenance, promoting better physical performance.

“At the heart of our scientific endeavors is the commitment to deliver superior nutritional protein solutions that support a balanced diet. In this way, the Muscle, Performance and Recovery research team brings health through food to as many people as possible,” Andy concludes.
