May 6, 2021
The first 1000 days, from conception to 2 years of age, is a unique period of rapid growth and development that lays the foundation for future health. In this period, a healthy development of the gut plays a key role not only for optimal digestion and absorption of nutrients and fluids; it is also a prerequisite for the overall immune development of the infant. Optimal nutrition during the early period of life is of major relevance for the development of a healthy, well-functioning gut and immune system.
“Human milk provides many bioactive compounds. Of these many compounds, oligosacharides, immune cells, bacteria and their metabolites play a key role in the development of a healthy gut microbiota and immune system.”
