This longitudinal, prospective case-control study comprises insights in feeding patterns and practices during weaning in PKU.

Children with PKU experience similar weaning process to children without PKU with regards to food texture progression, reduction in formula intake, self-feeding skills and gastrointestinal symptoms. Children with PKU and healthy controls are developmentally equivalent by 2 years of age. Children with PKU do experience longer periods of parental control with feeding processes, such as extended parental spoon-feeding and separate mealtimes from others. Differences are likely associated with parental anxiety and a desire to feel in control of their child’s eating.
