At Danone, our mission is to bring health through food to as many people as possible. Supporting this mission, our Research and Innovation Center focuses on various areas, including the discovery of new ingredients inspired by nature’s compounds. “Plant bioactives, such as polyphenols, are compounds that induce protective physiological responses in the human body to promote health. Specifically, the Danone’s plant-based portfolio wants to bring health and nutrition through Plant-powered goodness.” states Mariana Rocha, plant-based Science Senior Manager.
What are polyphenols?
Plants produce a variety of chemicals to protect themselves against biotic and abiotic stress such as sun damage, insects or pathogens; these defense chemicals are commonly known as phytochemicals, phytonutrients, or plant bioactives. Polyphenol is the umbrella term to refer to a specific group of these phytochemicals. They are abundant in plant foods like blueberries, grapes, apples, and other fruits and vegetables, as well as in legumes, cereals, spices, coffee, and tea. “Polyphenols, though not strictly nutrients, seem to contribute to sustaining long-term health when included in our daily diet according to a growing body of evidence” explains Jose Villa Rodriguez, Senior Scientist at Danone Research & Innovation.
Current areas of research on polyphenols and nutrition
Since food is not only a source of energy but also a foundational pillar for achieving long-term health, polyphenols are being extensively researched across different domains, including metabolic health, brain health, sports performance, and gut health. The microbiome’s interaction with polyphenols is a significant aspect of this research, highlighting the complex interplay between diet and health. “Recent developments in polyphenol-microbiome interaction reveal promising potential for supporting gut health and overall wellness,” notes Sebastian Tims, Mission Biotics Development and Strategy.
