In this study, an extensive LC-MS/MS proteomic analysis was performed of extracellular vesicles (EVs) that had been purified from breast milk from seven individual donors, using a recently established, optimised density-gradient-based EV isolation protocol. The study showed that breast milk contains many more different proteins than previously thought. In addition, milk-derived extracellular vesicles are another important component in breast milk, which may be involved in transmitting (immune) signals from the mother to the new-born.
