Brain phospholipid metabolism is altered in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). The levels of phospholipids, a class of lipids that are essential for normal neuronal membrane function, are reduced in early AD. This study investigated whether a medical nutrition drink influences phospholipid brain metabolism in patients with mild AD.
The findings of this study indicate that the medical nutrition drink increased circulating levels of phospholipid precursors in patients with mild AD. In addition, the ratio between brain metabolites of phospholipid formation and breakdown was positively influenced, which is indicative of increased neuronal membrane formation.
