The objective of this double-blind, multicentre, randomised, controlled study was to investigate whether partially hydrolysed protein formula (pHP) supplemented with prebiotic oligosaccharides can prevent eczema in high-risk infants. Infants with a family history of allergy were randomised to receive either the pHP with prebiotics formula or a control formula (standard cows’ milk formula) until 6 months of age. Although the results showed no group difference in the incidence of eczema at 1 year of age, the study showed a significant reduction in cows’ milk specific IgG1 and significant higher percentages of Treg and pDC, demonstrating both modulation as well as training of the immune system. The study suggests that pHP with prebiotics may promote natural development of oral tolerance, through increase of immune cells involved in oral tolerance acquisition.
