This publication focuses on the development of intestinal microbiota in the first 1000 days. The gut microbiota colonisation and development is a very dynamic process, influenced by nutrition. A healthy gut microbiota in early life can be associated with improved health later in life. On the contrary, aberrant gut microbiota patterns may lead to identifying microbial signatures involved in the development of immunologic diseases later in life, such as allergies. This review provides an overview of the development of the gut microbiota, its interplay with the immune system, and its role in impacting health and disease, with emphasis on allergy.
